Shooting for the moon has become a familiar metaphor in early stage companies, yet there is a critical question that needs to be asked. Is your mission to launch the moonshot or to land on the moon? Launching the moonshot is an important milestone, but it’s just one milestone along the way. Likewise, raising a round of funding is just a milestone, but shouldn’t distract from the core outcome.
One of the things that we see throughout early stage ecosystems is a focus on deal sizes and valuations well prior to exit. These provide a great indicator of investor appetite and the overall strength of the asset class, however they also run a risk of distracting teams from the core mission.
